Cloud Nine was George’s first album for five years and was released on 2 November 1987 in the UK and 3 November 1987 in the US. The success of the lead single from it (Got My Mind Set On You) and the fact that George put a lot of effort into promoted it helped the album climb to number 10 in the UK charts with a healthy 23 week stay whilst in the US it managed to climb to number 8.
Recording took place at George’s home studios at Friar Park between January and August 1987 and amongst the contributing musicians are Ringo, Eric Clapton, Jeff Lynne, Elton John, Gary Wright and Jim Keltner. Jeff Lynne also assisted George with the highly polished production of the album.
This would be the last solo studio album George would release in his lifetime.
The initial UK and US CD releases are both on Dark Horse with catalogue number 925 643-2 and were released on the same date as their vinyl counterparts. The UK CD was made in Germany.
On 1 March 2004 a newly remastered version was released in the UK on Dark Horse/Parlophone under UK catalogue number 594 0902 with international catalogue number 7243 5 94237 2 2. This release contained two bonus tracks, Shanghai Surprise and Zig Zag from the Handmade film Shanghai Surprise. It could either be bought seperately or as part of the Dark Horse Years 1976-1992 box set. This version was released in the US around the same time on Dark Horse/Capitol under catalogue number CDP 7243 5 94090 2 3.
