Released in the UK on 13 July 1979 (or, depending where you read, 30 July 1979) Faster was the third single to be taken from the George Harrison album and, like it’s predecessor, Love Comes To Everyone, failed to chart. It was available in both a standard single version and also a limited edition picture disc – the first official Beatle related picture disc. It was not released in the US.
George has confirmed that he wrote the track about his passion for Formula One motor racing and included motor racing sound effects taken from the 1978 British Grand Prix. He has also stated, however, that he wrote the lyrics in such a way that they could be about The Beatles or anyone else chasing fame.
All the royalties from the single were donated to the Gunnar Nilsson Cancer Fund which was set up following the death of formula one driver Gunnar from cancer in 1978.
I have 3 copies on 7″ single shown below
Standard 7″ Single
The pictures below are of my solid centre standard copy (there were no push out centre copies) which has the matrix numbers K17423 A1 and K17284 B1. A hand etched STRAWBERRY also appears in the run off on both sides which means it was mastered at Strawberry Studios which was owned by Eric Stewart and Graham Gouldman of 10cc and named after Eric’s favourite Beatle song Strawberry Fields Forever. Visually the record is in excellent condition and it plays through beautifully on both sides. It is housed in a WEA single sleeve (there were no picture sleeves for this single) which has a sticker on the front confirming the royalties are going to the Gunnar Nilsson Cancer Fund. It is in very good to excellent condition, just a little shelf wear.
Funnily enough, although the picture disc was released as the limited edition, it is this version that is harder to get hold of!
Estimated Value : £20 – £30
Picture Disc 1
The pictures below are of my first picture disc copy that again has the matrix numbers K17423 A1 and K17284 B1 and a hand etched STRAWBERRY on the run off on each side. You’ll see that the A side features nine famous formula one drivers whilst the B side features a famous at the time John Player Special F1 car. It is housed in a clear PVC sleeve that, like the copy above, has a sticker on the front confirming the royalties are going to the Gunnar Nilsson Cancer Fund. There is also a thick backing card that is plain black on one side, except for “George Harrison” and “Faster” being written at the top and has a picture of George with Jackie Stewart, the lyrics and acknowledgements etc on the other side. I’ve not played the picture disc but visually it is in excellent condition. The PVC sleeve has a small 1″ split on one side whilst the backing card is in excellent condition.
Estimated Value : £20 – £30
Picture Disc 2
The pictures below are of my second picture disc copy which is identical to the one above except for not having it’s PVC sleeve or backing card. Again, I’ve not played it but visually it is in excellent condition.
Estimated Value : £10 – £15
