Ringo’s fourth album was released in the UK on 15 November 1974 and spent just two weeks in the charts at numbers 30 and 46. In the US it was released on 18 November 1974 and faired better managing twenty five weeks in the charts with a peak at number 8.
It was recorded in Los Angeles during August 1974 and, unlike the Ringo album where all the Beatles appeared at some point, only John lent a hand this time. He wrote the title track, also recording a demo of it for Ringo on 28 June 1974, and also suggested he record Only You, providing a vocal guide track for Ringo to sing over. John plays the Piano on the track Goodnight Vienna (both versions) and also plays guitar on All By Myself and acoustic guitar on Only You.
Despite the lack of Paul and George plenty of other artists appear on the album including Elton John, who co wrote Snookeroo with Bernie Taupin, Harry Nilsson, who wrote Easy For Me, Klaus Voormann, Billy Preston, Gary Wright, Jesse Ed Davis, Dr John, Robbie Robertson, Jim Keltner, Nicky Hopkins, Richard Perry, Lon and Derrek Van Eaton, Bobby Keys with even May Pang throwing in some backing vocals.
The album cover is a still from the original 1951 sci fi film The Day The Earth Stood Still with Ringo’s head replacing that of actor Michael Rennie who played the alien Klaatu. It comes with a card inner containing the lyrics on one side and various photos from the recording sessions on the other.

UK First Press
The pictures below are of my first press copy which has the matrix numbers YEX 939-3U and YEX 940-3U. It also has SW1-3417-ENG and TML-S hand etched into side 1 and SW2-3417-ENG and TML-S hand etched into side 2. Visually the record looks lovely, just the odd light scuff, and it plays very well – just some light crackle though mainly only noticeable between tracks and in quieter moments. The sleeve is in very good to excellent condition, it has some light shelfwear, most noticable on the corners, and some light ringwear. The inner is in very good condition, it just has a small 2″ split at the bottom.
Estimated Value : £5 – £10
