Originally released on 11 December 1970, John’s first “proper” album mainly featured just John, Ringo and Klaus Voormann though both Billy Preston (on God) and Phil Spector (on Love) did add piano whilst Yoko contributed “wind” and Mal Evans provided “tea and sympathy”. It was recorded just after John had undergone primal therapy under Arthur Janov which encouraged him to relive his repressed childhood memories and all this comes out in the songs. Considered to be his best album, even today it makes it’s way into all the respectable “Top albums of all time” lists.

It received it’s initial official release on CD in the UK on 5 April 1988. It was issued on the Parlophone label under catalogue number CDP 7 46770 2/CDFA 3310 and contained the same tracks as the original album.

The next official release was in November 1994 on EMI’s budget Fame label and carried the catalogue number CDFA 3310. Again, the track listing was as per the original album.

To celebrate what would have been John’s 60th birthday a new digitally remixed and remastered version was released on 9 October 2000 that included Power To The People and Do The Oz as bonus tracks. This was on the EMI label with catalogue number 7243 5 28740 2 6 / 528 7402.

Finally, on 4 October 2010, to celebrate John’s 70th birthday, a further release was issued on EMI/Apple with barcode number 5099990650529. This version was digitally remastered from John’s original audio mix and contained no bonus tracks. It could either be bought seperately or as part of the Signature box set.
