I have the original gatefold release of Rock n Roll Music and also the 1980 MFP re releases which were released as 2 seperate LPs. It’s actually worth having both sets as when the idea originally came about to release this album (by Capitol in the US) George Martin flew over to supervise. After listening to some of the older tracks with terrible stereo and background noise he set about polishing them up for release. The newly remixed versions were how they were released in the US but EMI in the UK took The Beatles instructions of not touching their recordings in any way whatsoever quite literally so we did not get George Martin’s new versions on our release here. This was rectified when George Martin’s versions were used on the MFP releases.

Like the 1962-1966 and 1967-1970 album releases the MFP versions come in blue and red, though blue is the earlier version this time and red the latter.

Another interesting fact about this album is that it was the first time where an entire side (side 2) did not feature any tracks written by them.

Original Release

The pictures below are of my original release which was released on 10 June 1976 and is a double in a gatefold sleeve. Although the catalogue number is PCSP 719 you’ll see that the discs themselves are numbered PCS 7191 and PCS 7192. The matrix numbers on this copy are YEX 955-2, YEX 956-2, YEX 957-1 and YEX 958-1. I believe there was just the one pressing of this album

The laminated gatefold sleeve is in excellent condition, just a touch of ringwear. The records themselves are also in excellent condition, the odd spot of ultra feint crackle here and there but no skips, sticks or jumps

Estimated Value : £10 – £15

MFP Release Vol 1

The pictures below are of my MFP Vol 1 version which was released on 27 October 1980 under catalogue number MFP50506. The matrix numbers are SKBO 11537-1A-1 and SKBO 11537-1B-1. This has the US George Martin mixes and a new cover (there were a lot of complaints about the original cover).

The sleeve is in excellent condition, some light ringwear and a spot of residue on the front where a sticker has been removed. The record itself both looks and plays excellent, maybe some very feint crackle here and there but no skips, sticks or jumps. It comes with a white EMI inner sleeve.

Estimated Value : £5

MFP Release Vol 2

The pictures below are of my MFP Vol 2 version which was also released on 27 October 1980 under catalogue number MFP50507. The matrix numbers are SKBO 11537-2A-1 and SKBO 11537-2B-1. Again this has the US George Martin mixes and a new cover.

    Hi

I have this album but with different matrix numbers to yours – mine are:

    YEX 955-2 / YEX 956-1
    And
    YEX 957-2 / YEX 958-1

Do you know if these are different issues or re-issues?

    Many thanks

      Hi Chris

As far as I know there was only the one press of this album – until the MFP releases of 1980 – so yours will be an original issue. The matrix numbers are just an indicator of how early the albums were pressed – the lower the number the earlier it was pressed.

      Thanks
