Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band received it’s initial release on CD on 1 June 1987 (it was twenty years ao today….). On the same day HMV released a limited edition (10,000 copies) LP sized box set containing the CD, a badge, a booklet of photos and the cardboard cut outs. It had a sixteen week run in the charts, peaking at number 3. It had a further run of thirty three weeks in the charts in June 1992, peaking at number 6, when EMI promoted it’s twentieth anniversay and four weeks in June 1997, peaking at number 47, when it’s fortieth anniversary was promoted.
It was released again on CD on 9 September 2009 as part of the stereo remasters where it had a five week run in the charts peaking at number 5. In the initial week of the remastered releases The Beatles held 17 of the top 100 positions. Sgt Pepper was the highest placed of these.
26 May 2017 saw a 50th anniversary edition released containing a new stereo mix by Giles Martin. This release climbed to the number 1 spot in the charts and is still in the charts at the time of writing. It came in 3 different CD formats – the single CD release contained just the new stereo mix whilst the 2 CD release contained the new stereo mix and the 1967 mono mix on the first CD and various takes from the Sgt Pepper sessions on the second CD. There was also a deluxe box set release which housed 4 CDs containing the new stereo mix, the original mono mix, bonus tracks and lots of takes from the Sgt Pepper sessions. It also contains a blu ray disc and a DVD which actually contain the same material – a 1992 Making Of Sgt Pepper documentary, promo films for A Day In The Life, Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane and Giles Martin’s 5.1 surround sound mix of the album. There is also a 144 page hardback book full of information and photos, the cardboard cut outs and two posters.
I have 6 copies on CD, the three shown below and 3 more in boxsets.
