The Best Of George Harrison CD

Initial UK Release Date 18 May 1987
Initial UK Catalogue Number Parlophone CD PAS 10011
Weeks On UK Chart (to date) 1
Peak UK Chart Position 100

Originally released on 20 November 1976 in the UK and 8 November 1976 in the US, this best of collection initially failed to chart in the UK (it would spend one week in the UK charts at number 100 in January 2002 following George’s death) but did manage to make number 31 in the US.

George’s contract with EMI/Capitol, along with those of John and Ringo (Paul renewed his with Capitol), had expired on 26 January 1976 so both companies were now free to do what they wanted with his back catalogue and, unfairly, released this collection within days of his new Thirty Three and 1/3 album. Unusually, and unlike John’s Shaved Fish collection and Ringo’s Blast From Your Past collection, they chose to fill side one with a selection of his Beatles songs and give only side two, just six tracks, to his solo efforts. George, who at one point had provided his own alternative track list, was obviously furious that his solo output had been ignored and would have nothing to do with this release.

It received it’s initial official release on CD in the UK on 18 May 1987 when it was released on Parlophone under UK catalogue number CD PAS 10011 with international catalogue number CDP 7 46682 2. The initial US CD release was around the same time on Capitol under catalogue number CDP 7 46682 2. Both releases carried the same cover as the original UK vinyl release (the original US vinyl release had a different cover). There were no bonus tracks on these releases.

Although there were a few re releases of this CD between it’s release date and 1992 it has never been remastered.

I have two copies on CD as shown below

Early UK Press

The pictures below are of my early UK copy – you’ll see that it says “Made In UK” at 9 o’clock on the CD. There is an Apple logo on the bottom right of the back cover which I don’t believe appears on the very first releases. The case (usual slight storage marks), 8 page insert and disc are in excellent condition.

Estimated Value : £5 – £10

Later EU Press

The pictures below are of my EU copy which is a later release – you’ll see that it says “Made In EU” at 9 o’clock on the CD and the Apple logo appears on the bottom right of the back cover. The case (usual slight storage marks), 8 page insert and disc are in excellent condition.

Estimated Value : £5 – £10
