As a taster for the Cloud Nine album due out on 2 November 1987, Got My Mind Set On You was released as a single in the UK on 12 October 1987 and spent fifteen weeks in the charts. It spent four of those weeks at number 2, kept off the top spot by T’Pau’s China In Your Hands. In the US it was released on 3 October 1987 and managed to reach the top spot during it’s 22 week run in the chart. This would be the last US number 1 from any of the ex Beatles making George the first and last solo Beatle to have had a US number 1 – My Sweet Lord being the first.
The song was not actually written by George, it was written by Rudy Clark and recorded by James Ray back in 1962. Apparently George bought a copy of this single when he was visiting his sister, Louise, in Illinois in 1963.
Lay His Head on the B side is a remixed version of one of the four tracks rejected by Warner Brothers when George originally submitted his Somewhere In England album.
This 12″ version was issued in the UK on the same day as the 7″ single in both a standard vinyl copy and a picture disc. Both of these 12″ versions have an extended version of Got My Mind Set On You on the A side and the standard single versions of Got My Mind Set On You and Lay His Head on the B Side.
I have a copy of each, shown below. Details of my UK 7″ press can be found here.
Standard 12″ Single
The pictures below are of my standard 12″ copy which has the matrix numbers *W-8178(T) A-1* and *W-8178(T) B-1*. The record is in beautiful condition visually and plays through just about perfectly. The top opening sleeve is in very good to excellent condition, just some very light shelf wear and ringwear but no rips, splits or writing etc.
Estimated Value : £5 – £10
12″ Picture Disc
The pictures below are of my 12″ picture disc which has the matrix numbers W-8178-TP-A and W-8178-TP-B. The record is in excellent condition visually though I have not play tested it. It is still in it’s original transparent sleeve that is a little rippled but it has no splits etc and still has the limited edition sticker attached.
Estimated Value : £15 – £20
