Originally released on 8 October 1971 in the UK and a full month earlier on 9 September 1971 in the US, Imagine topped the charts in both countries and most others around the world. It has so far spent just over one hundred weeks in the UK charts spending two weeks at the top spot on it’s initial release. George Harrison contributes to five of the tracks on the album, including How Do You Sleep, John’s attack at Paul in retaliation for what he thought he heard/saw on Paul’s recent Ram album. The title track has gone on to be John’s signature track, regularly featuring in any “top ten tracks of all time” lists.
It received it’s initial official release on CD in the UK on 26 May 1987. It was issued on the EMI label under catalogue number CDP 7 46641 2/CD-PAS 10004 and contained the same tracks as the original album. This was re released in 1992 with the same catalogue number.
A new digitally remixed and remastered version was released on 14 February 2000 and, again, no bonus tracks were included. This was on the EMI label with catalogue number 7243 5 24858 2 6 / 524 8582. This release managed to make an appearance in the UK charts for one week only at number 51.
On 4 October 2010, to celebrate John’s 70th birthday, a further release was issued on EMI/Apple with barcode number 5099990650222. This version was digitally remastered from John’s original audio mix and contained no bonus tracks. It could either be bought seperately or as part of the Signature box set.
The latest CD release came on 5 October 2018 and was available as a 2 CD edition, Apple 0602567742678 in the UK/Europe and Apple/Capitol B0028801-02 in the US, or a 4 CD, 2 blu ray Ultimate Edition box set, Universal Music Group/Apple 0602567671268 in the UK/Europe and Capitol 0602567671268 in the US. The 2 CD set contains the original album remixed from the original master tapes plus some outtakes whilst the box set contains the remixed album plus a new 5.1 remix, outtakes, live studio mixes, a documentary, interviews and a ton more. Also included is a marvelous hardback book. This release entered the UK charts at number 19 and the US charts at number 83 on it’s release.
I have 4 copies of the album on CD, the three shown below and one in the Signature box set.
The pictures below are of my 1992 copy. This is very similar in appearance to the 1987 release though you’ll see an Apple appears on the rear cover which is not on the original. Also the writing on the original CD itself is more “blocky” than on this one. The case (usual slight storage marks), inserts and disc are in excellent condition.
Estimated Value : £5 – £10
The pictures below are of my remixed and remastered copy from 2000. The case (usual slight storage marks and half of a sticker still attached), inserts and disc are in excellent condition.
