Released on 13 July 1992 in the UK and 14 July 1992 in the US, Live In Japan is actually credited to George Harrison With Eric Clapton And Band. It failed to chart in the UK and only managed to reach number 126 in the US. In Japan it reached number 15 in the charts.
These recordings are taken from George’s short tour of Japan which he undertook with Eric Clapton between 1 December 1991 and 17 December 1991. The tour was billed as the Rock Legends Tour and 12 gigs in total were played in 6 different cities. The actual recordings are from the gigs at Osaka and Tokyo.
The set list for the tour ran exactly as it does on the album with While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Roll Over Beethoven being played as the encore. What’s not included is the four songs Eric Clapton did every night, Pretending, Old Love, Badge and Wonderful Tonight, which were played between Piggies and Got My Mind Set On You. It’s also worth pointing out that on the first night of the tour two extra tracks, Fish On The Sand and Love Comes To Everyone, were performed, with Love Comes To Everyone being dropped from the second night onwards then Fish On The Sand from the third night.
The initial UK and US CD releases are both on Dark Horse with catalogue number 7599-26964-2 (UK) and 9 26964-2 (US) and were released on the same date as their vinyl counterparts. The UK CD was made in Germany.
On 1 March 2004 a new remastered version was released in the UK on SACD 5.1 surround sound. It was on Dark Horse/Parlophone under UK catalogue number 594 6652 and international catalogue number 7243 5 94665 2 1. The US also released this version around the same time on Dark Horse/Capitol under catalogue number CDP 7243 5 94665 2 1. It could either be bought seperately or as part of the Dark Horse Years 1976-1992 box set.
I have 2 copies on CD, the one shown below and one in my Dark Horse Years 1976-1992 box set here.
