Originally released on 4 October 1974 in the UK and a week earlier on 26 September 1974 in the US, Walls And Bridges was recorded during John’s “Lost Weekend” where he was seperated from Yoko and living with May Pang. Two tracks were lifted from the album for singles, Whatever Gets You Thru The Night and #9 Dream, the first of these giving John a US number one which was his only US or UK single chart topper in his lifetime.

The picture of the football match on the cover is one John did in 1952 when he was 11 years old and the colours of the teams are those of Arsenal and Newcastle who contested the FA Cup final that year. One of the players is wearing the number 9, John’s favourite number.

It received it’s initial official release on CD in the UK/Europe on 20 July 1987 on the EMI label under international catalogue number CDP 7 46768 2 and UK catalogue number CD PCTC 253 and contained the same tracks as the original album. It came with a 16 page booklet of lyrics and pictures.

A new remixed and remastered version was released in the UK/Europe and in the US on 22 November 2005 with three bonus tracks of Whatever Gets You Thru The Night (Live with Elton John), a previously unreleased acoustic version of Nobody Loves You (When You’re Down And Out) and a promotional interview with Bob Mercer. This version also has a different cover, using one of the pictures taken of John for the album shoot where he’s wearing five pairs of glasses The UK/Europe version was on the Parlophone/Apple label with catalogue number 0946 3 40971 2 3/340 9712 .

Finally, on 4 October 2010, to celebrate John’s 70th birthday, a further release was issued on EMI/Apple with barcode number 5099990650826. This version was digitally remastered from the original recording with no bonus tracks. It could either be bought seperately or as part of the Signature box set.
